Dialogue with Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl, about Design

1.As we all know, in the past 30 years, Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl has been concerned with water sensitive urban design and paying attention to using natural system with local conditions to realize the function of stormwater management system. Mr. Leonard, when working on a project, how do you and your team adjust measures according to local conditions? Please take an example of your project.

Leonard Ng: Firstly we would understand the client’s requirements, and with that we need to ensure that every single demands are recognized comprehensively. The next step is to evaluate the site’s conditions, assess the potential development opportunities, risks and benefits. With the understanding of the site’s characteristics, we can then come out with methodologies and technical ideations on how we could make the best use of the entire project site to achieve client’s objective. For the Sugei Buloh Wetland Reserve project, the aim was to create a sustainably designed activity loop, in which we created interactive and educational stations for people to experience the natural environment of the site. We adjusted measures for the stations in a manner that would still conserve the area’s sensitive and natural characteristics, as per client’s request, transforming the park into an attractive global destination for showcasing the reserve’s rich biodiversity.

2. Mr. Baur, I know you’re not only an excellent leader in design and operation management with rich experience, but also a landscape architect with unique insights. The design of public open space which you pay attention to is attached great importance by the government of Singapore and China. Your classical project like Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Parkhas attracted extensive attention and design followers in Singapore, China and even the whole Asia area. When you are undertaking this project, what is the most difficult situation you have encountered? How did you solve this problem?

Tobias Baur: We always pride ourselves in undertaking projects with designs and concepts that are innovative and new to the Asia region. The ability to transform or redevelop urban areas into a more vibrant, socially connected and ecological footprint environment is what allowed Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl to successfully gain valuable recognition regionally and globally. One of the most difficult aspect of this vision for the Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park was the integration of a pragmatic and sustainable water sensitive urban design within the relevant existing landscape architectures. We did mock ups on site to convince clients of our ideas, andbuilt trust by demonstrating and conveying the idea of how we can convert a utilitarian water canal into a beautiful naturalized river and park with a functional water system.”

Dialogue withRamboll Studio Dreiseitl, about Team Management

3. Mr. Leonard, it’s well known that Singapore is a multicultural country like a fully inclusive and equitable melting pot. I guess all your team members come from different countries and districts. Due to different cultures, education backgrounds and employment experiences, your team members must have both similarities and differences in some project design. As the core leader, how do you maintain the right balance of this divergence? And how do you choose in the end?

Leonard: We are fortunate to be able to have the opportunity to formulate a multicultural team much easier as compared to our overseas counterparts. With a culturally diversified group, our Singapore office can offer insightful innovative alternatives, an added competitive advantage for the region’s local market to consider. Though hiring people of different nationalities and culture is important, I always try to maintain a strong local core here. It is essential that our local team’s numbers do not fall below 50%, as their knowledge of local market conditions are ultimately crucial in adapting our design strategies and methodologies.

4. Mr. Baur, the consultancy team under your leadership has won the customers’ recognition and praise in the aspect of design quality and time as well as budget management. How do you strike a balance between excellent design work and operation management at the same time? Regarding to the team, how do you allocate staff work?

Tobias Baur: At Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl, we believe that design and functionality are two important aspects that needs to be highly synchronized and correlated. Every design needs to be feasible, and every function must play a role in sustainable design. Within Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl, we always try our best to source for an international interdisciplinary team, which should consist of Engineers, Landscape Architects, Landscape Designers and Project Managers of different nationalities. Depending on the scale, type and size of a project, we will handpick the teamwithin Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl that we feel are the most suitable to undertake the pertinent task.

Dialogue with Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl, about Future

5. At present, which projects of Ramboll Studio Dreiseitl are under construction in Singapore worthy of our attention in the future?

The following are some of the exciting future projects that are currently under construction

The Kallang Riverside – A dynamic project that ensures that the Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD) does not equate to just an utilitarian design, but to have water celebrated in iconic features – a natural swimming pool, cleansing biotopes and art features which double as water monitoring stations

The Mandai Nature Safari Lake Park–A project that looks to rejuvenate Mandai into a world class integrated wildlife and nature heritage precinct in Singapore. The proposed rejuvenation is a multi-generation endeavour that will bring together urban planning, ecology and technology expertise to build on and conserve Singapore’s nature heritage.

Jurong Lake Park – The philosophy that underpins the landscape design for Jurong Lake Gardens West is based on the concept of creating biophilic cities that encourage the sustainable co-existence of man and nature.

Singapore HDB Admiralty - The development helms the exploration of inter-community dynamics and urban density in land scarce Singapore, where the increased stress on the ground level demands creative ways of intensifying land use.
